Why is "pants" always plural in English?

You only have one pair, so why do we say "pants are" instead of "pants is"? In English, some nouns are always plural — and 'pants' is one of them.

Why is "pants" always plural in English?

You put on one pair of pants — that's one piece of clothing, not two — so why do we treat them as plural? In English, some words always take a plural form, even when they refer to just one thing. And in this case, the reason is pretty simple. Let's take a closer look.

How we use "pants" in English

"Pants" might refer to a single piece of clothing, but the word itself acts like it's more than one. That's because pants, like shorts and jeans, are made with two parts — one for each leg. That's why we always say "pants are" and never "pants is."

For example:

"My pants are blue."

"Her new yoga pants are really comfortable."

"These pants are too long."

Dog wearing pants that are slipping off

If it sounds strange at first, think of it like scissors or glasses — they also come in two connected parts, and we treat them as plural too.

What other clothing items are always plural?

"Pants" isn't the only word that works this way — other clothing items do too. Jeans, shorts, trousers, and pajamas all refer to a single item, but in English, they always take a plural verb.

For example:

"These jeans are perfect."

"My shorts are in the wash."

Man dancing and doing laundry

"Those trousers are too big."

"His pajamas are striped."

Even when referring to just one part of these items, we still treat them as plural. That's why we say "these pant legs are too long" instead of "this pant leg is too long."

So no matter how many pants, shorts, or pajamas you own, you'll always talk about them in plural. And the more you practice, the more natural it feels — just like putting on your pants.
